As of Thursday, 9 April 2026, RAC Rescue helicopters have successfully undertaken 11,000 missions, providing critical assistance to individuals in urgent and often life-threatening situations. Since their inception in 2003, RAC Rescue helicopters have established themselves as an integral component of Western Australia's emergency response network, collaborating effectively with other emergency services, including St John WA, WA Police, and frontline personnel and volunteers from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).
Each of the 11,000 missions is executed by a highly skilled team comprising pilots, critical care paramedics, aircrew officers, engineers, and administrative staff, all working in unison to ensure that RAC Rescue is accessible when required. The pilots possess advanced training that enables them to reach locations inaccessible to other emergency services, whether responding to incidents on Bluff Knoll, aiding distressed vessels at sea, or utilising night vision equipment to navigate challenging terrains. They operate under unpredictable conditions and in demanding environments.
In partnership with RAC, the DFES Emergency Rescue Helicopter Service is dedicated to a singular objective: to save lives and provide timely assistance to the residents of Western Australia when they require specialised support. The milestone of 11,000 missions signifies not only an important achievement for RAC Rescue but also represents the profound impact on people during some of their most difficult times. It is our sincere hope that those we have aided continue to recover, reconnect with their families, and remember that RAC Rescue was present in their time of need. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who are no longer with us.
