Mecaer Aviation Group (MAG), an Italian company specialized in the design, production, and support of aerospace components and systems, has entered into an agreement with MD Helicopters to enhance the avionics of MD500E helicopters. This agreement was formalized during Verticon 2026, a prominent international trade fair focused on vertical aviation, which took place in Atlanta. The agreement entails a comprehensive upgrade of the aircraft’s onboard instrumentation, replacing the existing analog systems with a modern, fully digital glass cockpit that complies with the latest industry standards.

The upgrade program for the MD500E helicopters will be executed at MAG’s facility located in San Benedetto del Tronto (AP), which serves as the primary hub for helicopter maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) activities. Marco Acca, the Chief Executive Officer of Mecaer Aviation Group, stated that this initiative, in collaboration with MD Helicopters, signifies a pivotal advancement in the technological evolution of the platform. Moreover, this program is viewed as a pilot initiative with the potential for broader application to the European MD500E fleet.

Ryan Weeks, the President and Chief Executive Officer of MD Helicopters, expressed pride in partnering with Mecaer Aviation Group to incorporate advanced digital cockpit capabilities into the MD500E helicopters. He noted that this upgrade will enhance situational awareness, improve operational efficiency, and reaffirm the commitment to delivering modern, mission-ready solutions to operators worldwide.

The collaboration between Mecaer Aviation Group and MD Helicopters is built upon a longstanding industrial relationship. At MAG’s Monteprandone facility, over 140 helicopters from the NH-300 and NH-500 families were produced under license from Hughes Helicopters between the 1970s and 1990s, with Hughes serving as the predecessor to the present-day MD Helicopters.
